New York city was always a crowded place. Be that late in the night, or early in the morning, this concrete jungle resembled a giant anthill, with people hustling and bustling about their lives and issues 24/7. It was an easy place to get lost in, to blend in, to get carried away by the constant flux of people going up and down the streets.
Especially if everyone around tends to ignore your pleas for assistance.
Which was exactly what was happening to Renee ever since she got off the plane that brought her to New York from wherever she used to live and work. This new contract with that weird place called North Salem High School. She got a bit of intel about the place - it was a place made for mutants and humans to 'peacefully coexist'. The woman believed it to be, frankly, a lost cause.
It was not only because of the incident that almost rendered her a handicap, and made her constantly feel the chill of metal rods planted into her back. Renee was also honest with herself. Mutants were just better. They rarely had any handicaps to diminish their superb abilities, but almost always possessed something no normal human could ever do. No matter how hard they trained. And in-born superior strength and agility could bring down someone who trained her whole life to achieve the same...
Renee shoved these depressive thoughts away. She was to be a teacher in that place, and it would be her duty to balance out these nuisances, and not make any kid feel more or less important or capable than the other. That's what she was taught back in the university. But like always, easy to say, hard to do...
Because you have to find the damn place first!
And Renee had trouble with that ever since she set foot down from the boarding ramp. She expected it to be easy - just approach anyone, and ask for directions. But no, nobody gave any. They just shrugged, and said "Don't know, never heard of it.", and retreated in haste. Even taxi cabs were unwilling to go there for some reason. And this ... was severely trying the woman's patience.
- CAN SOMEONE IN THIS GOD-DAMNED TOWN GIVE A LADY SOME F***ING DIRECTIONS?! - she yelled out loud in frustration, after yet another person decided to play silent, and threw a punch that made the person run away in panic, and sat down on the nearby bench, a heavy briefcase on wheels at her side. She was patient, compared to a few years ago, where such blatant ignoring would've ended up with a few broken limbs, but ... this time Renee held herself. This was a new leaf, after all, wasn't it? Would suck to start it with getting into custody on your very first day at the town...
I should've asked someone to meet me. Ugh, why good ideas always come at the wrong time?

For all he knew it could be one of the last times he could have to relax given that school was going to start again soon. Especially given that there was going to be Mutants there too...
Lance sighed. He had to stop thinking like that. Mutants weren't all bad people, right? ...Still he couldn't shake the feeling that nothing good was going to come out with having a school with Mutants and Humans together. People his age did stupid things, he knew that from experiance. He had done stupid things after all. He just had to make sure nothing bad would happen or, if something did happen, to do his best to fix it.
His eyes suddenly caught a Woman throwing a punch at some poor guy before sitting down on a bench. Well she seemed like a happy bunny... Lance had to wonder what the problem was. Maybe he could help. He understood anger, it was a beast he had been up and close with, after all. Calmly he walked over to her with his hands in his leather jacket pockets.
"You alright, lady?" The Teenager asked looking down at her before he decided to sit down beside her. "You know... Whatever you want I can promise you that trying to punch some guy ain't gonna help. " He turned his head to face her. "Understand?" Lance pushed his glasses back up his face calmly. "Either way, what's the problem? Maybe I can help you." | [atrb=vAlign,bottom][atrb=style,border-left: 5px #5784bc solid;]PROUD

Well, if her karma wasn't just paying off.
Apparently the little display of force managed to give enough of a signal that this woman wasn't to be trifled with - the flux of people making a good arch to avoid the place where her bench was. Hmpf. Renee crossed arms on her chest, and breathed out, closing her eyes, and trying to come to her senses. It wasn't an easy task, since the woman was always fiery and impulsive.
Peace, quiet, tranquility... That sort of thing.
Sort of thing that wasn't easy to find in the middle of a noisy street. Especially when someone decided to make it his mission to ruin. She heard steps coming closer to her, followed by 'a matter of fact' kind of words, stating obvious things she kinda figured out already. A frown crossed her features, and she opened her eyes, glaring at whoever it was. Some wise guy or something?
- Listen kid. - she said, bolting up from the bench, and looking down at the stranger who just sat and talked to her; - I'm not exactly in the mood for lecturing right now. Especially from people I see for the first time in my life. - that second part came out almost as a hiss, and her knuckle bones cracked as she clenched it. A vein was pulsing at her forehead, and eyebrows slightly trembling. Boy, she was pissed, and if the last guy got off with one punch, the next one trying her patience might find himself collecting teeth from the floor.
- So if you wanna be a nice and helpful boy... Just tell me where is that goddamn mutant school in this forsaken city, because I swear, one more 'Never heard of it', and I will start punching teeth down peoples' throats! - the woman growled and breathed out, blood rushing away from her face, making it become pale again, as she closed her eyes and rubbed her temples in a last-ditch effort to calm herself. This kid didn't deserve the kind of greeting she gave him, did he? Temper was always an issue for Renee, and she was trying to control it. Key word here being 'try'.

OK, sure, maybe he could've acted a bit better himself but he was only trying to help. He looked at her hand as she clenched her fists and merely sighed. It was evident to him that this woman clearly had anger issues of some kind. He wasn't really worried either, Lance knew he could handle himself.
... And then she continued to explain that she was, in fact, a new teacher at his school. "... Ah..." Slowly he placed his head onto his right hand, rubbing his forehead slowly. "That explains it..." He muttered more to himself then anything. That'd be why people didn't tell her where she wanted to go. It did, however, reveal a new question... Whose bright idea was it hire HER?!
Lance thought for a bit. They must of had an interview, right? To see if she was good... Material for being a Teacher. They shouldn't hire someone who clearly could get so easily angered, especially with this school. Then it hit him like a tonne of bricks. They couldn't get anyone could they? Everybody could see something was going to go down, some teachers must of left and others would avoid signing up... So they got the desperate.
"Well..." Lance said as he raised his head to look at the lady again. "Welcome to North Salem!" He said as cheerily as he could manage with his new revelation. "My name's Lance, I'm a student... There." He put emphasis on 'there'. Hopefully the Teacher would at least be smart enough to know what he was talking about. "And, before you ask, I'm not one of them." Again he put emphasis of 'them'. Maybe it was rude to call the Mutants that but... He was treading on light ground no matter what. Mutant wasn't exactly a great name to be called either, in Lance's opinion. Hell by the way she looked, pale skin as she had, it was possible that she was a Mutant too...
"I'll show you the way if you're willing to walk with me..." Lance gave the Lady a look, a determined look. Of course he realized how this could be interpreted. "... There are things that must be discussed. Important things." Lance stood up and offered the Lady a hand. "Well?"

Renee's eyebrow darted up, as soon as she heard the kid talk.
Well, it looked like luck finally managed to give a smile upon her, for the first time this day. At last, someone who could lead her away from this place and show where her future working place would be! And a student too, no less! So she could ask some stuff beforehand. Yeah, the woman's mood began getting better, and even a brief smile shot across her face.
- FINALLY! - she exclaimed out loud, and lifted her heavy briefcase with one hand, effortlessly bringing it over her shoulder. - You have no idea how many people I approached with this question. After a few hours of being ignored, gets really annoying. Name's Renee by the way, and I'm gonna be a P.E teacher in your school. - she said and shook the hand the guy lend her, probably mistaking it for a handshake. She wasn't normally as cheery, but as of now, she was happy enough someone would give her directions.
- So... Lead the way. - the wave of cheeriness soon passed, and the woman returned to her average demeanor. As they would go, she shot a glare or two at the boy, or, to be more exact, his body. The guy looked fit, probably a sportsman too - she could guess that from the way he walked, and she could trace the muscles underneath the clothes. Another brief smirk came around - at least one of her students would be up to snuff. Would be a complete bummer if it would end up like that class of fatties at the previous school she worked in.
- So the city doesn't like that school huh? Do buses go there at least? Because every taxi cab I asked refused to drive me to the place. - Renee sighed and facepalmed at the stupidity of the situation. - I mean, I'm not a big fan of superpowered kids myself, but eh. What did you want to talk about?
The last question was laced with suspicion. Because if it was going to be another lecture of some kind - he would have another thing coming. Renee had pride after all, and wasn't gonna let a kid a decade younger than her tell her what to do...

Well, that hadn't been his intent but... Sure why not. He nodded when she asked if busses still went there. It wasn't all that much of a suprise to him that cabs wouldn't take her to the school. In a way it kind of upset him, and proved his point. Humans and Mutants just weren't ready to be in the same School, the same Workplace... He motioned Renee to follow him. "Just stick with me, I promise I'll take you there."
He began walking in the direction of the school before stopping beside one store, realizing that he was slightly hungry. "... One second." He walked into the store and picked up a couple of apples before paying for them at the till. "Alright?" He asked the man operating them, the man smiled and nodded and Lance. "Good, I'll see you around mate." Lance said as he picked up the apples and walked out the store again. He gave one to Renee before biting a mighty chunk out of his own. "I was hungry." He said. "And I thought you might be a little too if you've been walking around so long." With that he continued his walk to the school, slowing down to be at Renee's side.
"Basically..." Lance said as he took another bite out of his apple. "I think the Mutant-Human school thing is a bad idea. For several reasons." He turned around and began walking backwards while talking to Renee. "Now I don't hate Mutants, I just... Can tell that there's going to be some crazy trouble with them in the school. Not just on their part too. Anti-Mutant Radicals, Pro-Mutant Radicals- Anyone who wants to make a point is going to have their eyes and weapons set on the school, on the town."
Lance paused for a second to think about what to say next. He didn't expect to meet someone so early, he should've had more time to think about it. Oh well. "You probably already thought that much, really. To be honest I think you must be kind of crazy to come and work here." Again Lance paused. "Well, crazy or brave. Hopefully the second." He turned back around to walk forward once more. "Now I'm just a normal guy- But I'm a normal guy who's also a pretty damn good boxer, if you'll allow me to boast. What I'm effectively saying is that if you need any help with anything just ask me for it. All I ask is that, well... Tell me if you notice anything suspect going on alright? I love this place, it means the world to me..." He looked back at Renee over his shoulder. "I want to protect it from any trouble. I know it's naive to think I'll have any power to do as much but... Eh." | [atrb=vAlign,bottom][atrb=style,border-left: 5px #5784bc solid;]PROUD

A boxer, huh?
So Renee's guess was correct - the guy was a sportsman. That fact was a good way to get onto her good side, if she even had one. Just like she loathed weaklings and fatties, viewing them as ugly and weak-willed, she had respect towards people who keep fit, and especially fighters. Being a former fighter herself, Renee could relate. This Lance would be one of the few students who won't be giving her any trouble, and ...
Oh look, an apple.
- They offered me quite a bit of money. And practice I had underwent during my tuition was in one of the worst schools of the state. I know how to deal with punks. And I know a thing or dozen in martial arts. Will test you, once a chance presents itself... - Renee spoke about her reasons to be where she was, taking a bite off an apple. They were ... good fruits. Healthy, and cleaning teeth better than any bubblegum. She would rather discuss sports and such, but alas, the mutant subject brought a frown on her face again.
- And I don't like the idea of mutants being allowed near kids at all. Kids are dumb, by default. They do stupid things. Those often end up with bruises, bumps and bloody noses. When one of the kids knows to breathe fire, however... It may get worse. - she gave her viewpoint, as if predicting what would happen, certainty in her voice making it sound like she stated a fact. Well... maybe it was a fact, pretty much. She gave another look at Lance and grinned.
- I can put order in my class by myself, thank you. I really don't care if someone causing mayhem is mutant or normal, I'm gonna manhandle anyone who tries equally. - Renee tossed the apple core into the trash bin, and slammed her fist against her palm rather aggressively. Eyes gleaming with intent. Her facial expression became simpler again however, as she looked at the boy, and said:
- You're a senior though, aren't you? Know any particular people I need to put back in their place, when classes start?

That was something he felt he knew more about then other people. He had been one of those idiotic self-centered trouble-causing morons for a large portion of his life, at least until he took up Boxing. "I'm worried about the safety of everyone, I feel the same way about kids having... That much power. Even Adults do stupid things with power, there's no second thoughts about kids abusing it."
Lance then chuckled when Renee went on about how she was going to deal with anyone who was messing about. "I don't doubt your ability to handle your class, it's still better to be safe then sorry though. And... Yeah, do your best to treat everyone equally. Things'll get worse otherwise." Lance took another large chunk out of his apple. "As for looking out for anyone in particular? ... Honestly I have no clue. It's best to keep your eyes on everyone; for the first fortnight at least. This situation... Everyone's gonna be acting, or reacting as may be, in different ways." With that Lance bit into the core of his apple before tossing what remained of the upper and bottom half into the bin. Lance liked the core of apples, for whatever reason. Left less to waste either way.
The Teenager put his hands in his pockets as he continued to walk. "... I don't see how anyone thought this was a good idea. If Adults aren't ready to accept Mutants how the hell do they expect Teenagers to react? I mean I guess they want the new generation to be more accepting for the future... But still." Lance sighed before shrugging his shoulders. "Ah, what can you do? What sucks is that I want this to be alright, I want things to go well... If it doesn't then things are just gonna get worse all over. Then we'll have a real problem. Mutants ain't gonna stand being oppressed for long, I won't blame them for wanting to bite back. I mean... I know I sure as hell wouldn't put up being treated like a second-class citizen for long. I can only hope is that they have greater sense then I do." | [atrb=vAlign,bottom][atrb=style,border-left: 5px #5784bc solid;]PROUD

Guess the road to school wasn't going to be pleasant any time soon.
Not with the gloomy subject the two decided to pick to spend the time walking. Eh, but guess none could avoid it, could they? After all, this was the talk of the week, and probably month and year too. One had the misfortune of studying in a mutant school, another - to teach. What else could the two talk about?
Renee just sighed, and shook her head. Lance almost sounded sympathetic towards the genetic freaks back there, for a few seconds. She couldn't bring herself to be. She tolerated them, barely, but to be exact, she barely tolerated most people who were 'below her' in her books, so ... yeah. But sympathy? Every time she tried to, her spine responded to her with creaking audible only to her. Metallic poles keeping her spinal cords together, and a distant aching. No, she would not be sympathetic any time soon.
- People are afraid of them, and ... envious. - the woman said coldly, looking somewhere in the distance. - Mutants are rarely burdened with any back-fires of their abilities, but always have something akin to superpowers, like heroes in comic books. Something every kid would normally kill for. Most of them can do everything a normal person can, plus breathe fire, or levitate objects with mind. Comparatively, they're just ... better. - Renee added bitterly, biting the corner of her lip, and staring, as if seeing something.
For a few minutes, the woman would just silence, trying to shoo away thoughts that were only making her more angry and fired up. All temper-controlling exercises were implemented - deep breathes, counting to ten... Eventually, a sigh of relief escaped her chest, the wave have passed. But all of her words needed a conclusion, didn't they?
- Gonna be hard for us normals when all of them realize it.

That was a belief he didn't share with her, though he did understand why she though like that. Lance'd never be able to control elements, take bullets in stride or have super strength no matter how hard he trained... But he couldn't think that he'd never be at the same level as some Mutants. "I'm sorry but I just can't agree with you about that, at all." Lance pulled his hands out of his pockets and raised them into the air in a shrugging fashion as he turned to face the Teacher.
"Yeah it's true they can do things we never can, all sorts of things. But still..." Lance put his hand on his chin in a thoughtful manner as he thought about what he was going to say. "Well... Maybe they start off in a better position. So what? I can tell you I've fought people in the ring who were much physically stronger then me, straight up better then me like you say... I still won. Know why?" Lance smiled as he clenched his fist in front of his face. "I refused to give up. I trained as hard as I could so, while I wouldn't have strength like his, I could beat him in technique." He lowered his hand and faced forward again. "The same applies here. No opponent is unbeatable, you just gotta train yourself so you can beat them with something they don't have."
Lance smiled to himself. "And even then if you can't beat them... You don't give up. Never give up. As long as you keep pushing forward, keep trying, nearly anything is possible." He paused again. "And I say if they 'realize' they're better then us... Well there are way more Humans then there are Mutants. It'd be suicide for them, and not all Mutants think they're better. Some Mutants just want to get along, I'm pretty sure most do in the end..." | [atrb=vAlign,bottom][atrb=style,border-left: 5px #5784bc solid;]PROUD

There is a time in a person's life when they think they can accomplish everything, if they put enough willpower into whatever they're doing. When they age, become wiser, they begin to understand that in life there are certain limitations, limitations that cannot be overcome by sheer will. Renee reached that age, and Lance, apparently, did not. And it was ... kinda funny.
- Alright alright, 'nough prep-talk already. We're not at the ring, and you're not the coach. What I meant is ... techniques, strength, even force of will which makes you stand up and carry on - everyone could train. You can' train yourself to breathe fireballs, or jump 100 feet. People don't like it. And neither do I. - the last sentence came out as a grunt - the ache in her back was getting more noticeable. Just like doctor said - you would feel it all the time, especially if you put any strain on it. Renee figured out what it was soon enough - the heavy luggage case she was carrying on her shoulder for a good while. She shot a glance at the over-optimistic boy, and a sly grin appeared on her face.
- Anyhow, lets change the subject. Be a gent, will ya? Carry this for a while. - the woman said, and without further ado just put the heavy case on his back, as if he were some working horse. - Shame on you to not have offered it yourself in the first place. - she joked a bit, and bowed in front, flexing her spine, and touching the floor wit the tips of her fingers. Back cracked gleefully, relieved of the burden of carrying things. Yes, much better.
- So ... are we nearing the bus stop yet? - Renee asked, feeling that she succeeded in changing the topic to something else. In truth, the only comforting thing in Lance's words was that there were much more non-mutants than mutants. There's strength in numbers, isn't it?
For now, at least.

Lance went as the heavy case was put on his back, causing him to stumble before gaining his footing and holding onto the case properly. "I thought you could handle it, I didn't want to insult you is all!" He said defensively in a joking manner. "But fine, I can handle this little thing." It wasn't that heavy to Lance considering all the work he did. Sure strength wasn't all that mattered in his sport, but it sure as hell helped.
Lance looked forward, putting his hand over his eye. "Eh, not too long now I don't think." He said before continuing walking forward. "They'll drop you pretty close, but I wouldn't recommend it if you have other ways of getting to the School. Still good enough I think." Lance looked at the teacher briefly. It wasn't all that hard to see that something had happened to her in the past to do whatever made her back like that, probably something to do with Mutants the way she seemed to think of them. Still Lance didn't think it good to pry, especially considering that she was going to be Teaching at his School.
He continued walking in the right direction until he came to the bus stop and paused, thinking for a moment. "It should be the second bus that comes now..." He said as he let go of the case, leaning it on the side. He kept his hand on it just in case some idiot though it'd be a good idea to steal it while he wasn't looking. Lance didn't want to be blamed for letting Renee's stuff get stolen. He looked over at her. "Should be able to see where to go when you arrive... Well, it looks like things were looking up.
The duo reached the bus stop, now it was only a matter of time before the bus would come about, and Renee would board it, and be on her way to school - and the dormitories, where she was supposed to be stationed. All'n'all, she was rather lucky in the end, to conveniently meet a student from the school she was going to work in. A rather helpful lad also...
- Nah, I don't need anything else. Thanks for the help though, appreciated. - the woman nodded, and took her luggage from his hands, looking for the arriving bus. And indeed, soon enough, it appeared, the yellow color visible from afar. Grinning, Renee shot another look at Lance, while he was looking the other way. A stray thought went through her mind, one that made her chuckle. Too bad you're not a bit older, kid.
- Well... looks like my ride's here. I better be going too. See ya when the classes start. - Renee said and lifted her heavy luggage, dragging it up the ladder, and getting inside the bus. There were no places to sit, so she would have to stand. But, before the doors would close, and the vehicle would be on its way, her smile turned into a frown as she looked at Lance, and shouted:
- You better not skip my classes! Or I'll kick your ass!
And at that lovely note, the doors would shut, and, with a soft roar of the old engine, the bus would take off, towards the mysterious place known among the people as 'Mutant School'. The place her destiny lead her to...

"Wouldn't dream of it! See ya!" He said in reply to her comment about kicking his ass if he didn't show up to her lessons. Lance didn't think he had skipped for a while now.
He walked off in the direction of his house, putting his hands in his pockets as he did. Soon School would start and sooner or later he'd see whether or not he'd been right about the trouble with the Mutants being there. He hoped he was wrong but... He wasn't naive like that. At least not in that sense.
Lance sighed. He liked his home, he liked his School, he liked everything about where and how he lived... He didn't want it to be destroyed, or hurt in any way. So he was going to defend it with everything he had, even if the foes he made were ten times stronger then he was.
