His father was the infamous Dr. Blake Winters, who's specialization in cardiology and mutant medicine had brought the family to its high style living today. Nick was brought up mostly by his mother and lived with her and his sister - Elizabeth Winters. They were twins - maternal as it seemed with very little difference in appearance but a lot in their personalities. While the boy's father was away at work for most of his life, Nick was a typical boy in his youth. Always looking up to heroes from cartoons and movies. He often indulged himself in the world of comic books. He always felt that he was normal - nothing exciting in his life. He always wished for adventure and to be a hero. He actually envied mutants. Nick is actually quite reserved to his parents and is more attached to his sister than them. Most likely since they favored his sister over him. Yet, he wasn't neglected either as he was given subjects in science to study. This is why the boy is so knowledgeable in that category. Not because it was forced on him, but because he began taking a interest in the subject on his own. Soon, when he was thirteen, his father revealed the secret laboratory in Norway were he and his team were finding a cure for mutants. He openly disliked the Norway laboratory at mutants were the next step in human evolution. This is when his father showed disappointment in him and gave preference to his sister in the field. Yet, he didn't lose all hope in the boy, for he had his father's intellect in him. When he was fourteen and attending Salem High, the boy was on the terrace of his school with his best friend. While goofing around, Nick accidentally slipped and fell from the roof. He thought it was the end, yet it was then he realized his abilities. On the verge of falling to his death, the boy instinctly transformed into an swiftlet quickly flying away to safe grounds. He was amazed at this power he was born with. He wondered if his twin had the same abilities. Even so, he was afraid to inform his family of his abilities, in case his father disowned him or they tried to cure him of his mutation. For a month, this worked well. However, one day his father caught him using his powers. In fact his father was amazed though not entirely happy. He wanted to keep it a secret and instead wanted to cure his son secretly along with learning more of the X-genes. Unaware of his father's motive, Phoenix soon gained good control of his powers, so much that he began using it in public as to spy on people. When his father knew of this - it greatly annoyed him as it would spoil the family name. He was kicked out of the Winters Household till further notice. Even so, his father hasn't lost hope in him. At the same time, his mother secretly sends him a big allowance on which he can spend with ease. This is when he joined the Xavier Institute where he not only got free living space but was also thought to control and excel in his powers. Within another year, Nick soon became the chief editor of his school newspaper and a columnist of the gossip column. He is also an avid photographer working part-time for a local newspaper. He tries to still keep connections with his sister. But the way he tries to show his love is rather annoying and eccentric. While Nick is quite an intelligent child, he also lazy - a reason for his failing grades. He is also quite an animal loving, claiming he can understand them - though this claim has no evidence.Nick also has a habit of showing his wealth by arriving to school in a limousine [hired by him with the money his mother sends] or gifting his many girls costly gifts.
