According to the United Nations Environment Program ( UNEP ), plastics are a climate problem that damages ecosystems, which is why it is urgent to make an agreement against plastic where the largest number of countries commit to taking action. action in this regard.
This is one of the objectives of the Fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) that takes place from February 28 to March 2, 2022. Below we share the details and importance of this Assembly.
Will this Assembly achieve an agreement against plastic?
The Fifth session of the United Nations Changsha Mobile Number List Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) took place in two steps: the first virtually from February 22 to 23, 2021 (UNEA-5.1) , and the second in a hybrid manner which takes place online and in Nairobi, Kenya from February 28 to March 2, 2022 ( UNEA-5.2 ).
The central theme will be "Strengthening actions for nature to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals."
Another key theme of the Assembly will be “Reuse
Solutions to Combat Plastic Pollution”. This session brings together the main stakeholders and voices in favor of change, where urgent actions are demanded, and reuse is incorporated as a fundamental tool in the fight against plastic pollution.
This is especially relevant because only 9% of the world's plastic waste is recycled:
From the 1950s to today, we have produced about 9 billion tons of plastics, and 7 billion tons are waste.
Inger Andersen, director of the UN Environment Program.
This is why it is so important to reach an agreement against plastics. To achieve this, it is necessary to develop a specific session whose objectives are:
Raise awareness and change mindsets about the urgent need to accelerate and scale reuse solutions to address plastic pollution.
Call on governments and businesses to create enabling environments to scale reuse solutions.
Solicit collaboration from multiple stakeholders and generate enthusiasm for reuse.
In general, the voices that were heard at the beginning of this Assembly were to stop plastic pollution that damages various ecosystems from the marine to the arctic.
The world watches with anxiety but also with hope. For the first time in history we are seeing an unprecedented global push to address the plague of plastic pollution.
Inger Andersen, director of the UN Environment Program.
Within this session, the presentation of a platform that aims to be a center of global excellence for interested parties to take actions and accelerate their solutions was also carried out , in particular:
Learn : Have access to truthful and relevant knowledge and resources for all parties interested in enabling the reuse of plastics.
Connect: Have an interactive space that promotes collaboration, shared learning and networking by providing access to a diversity of local and global experts in plastic reuse.
Contribute: Professionals get involved and contribute first-hand experiences and ideas about their efforts to advance plastic reuse.
Implement: Policymakers, businesses, and other stakeholders easily navigate action-oriented resources to implement reuse models in their own organizations and communities.
The Reuse Portal is scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2022. Although this session showed the urgency of taking actions to generate an agreement against plastic, it is expected that the decisions will be finalized in the following days.
The UN heard the business voice
This agreement against plastic has been on the table for a long time and from different sectors, one of them is business, which highlights social responsibility.
In January 2022, companies from different sectors such as: PepsiCo, Nivea, Beiersdorf, Essity, Cushelle, Schwarzkopf, Henkel, Zara, Inditex, Procter & Gamble (P&G), Starbucks, Marte, Mondelez Internacional, Grup H&M, Zalando, Pick n Pay, Werner & Mertz, and more, made a Commercial Declaration to carry out a Treaty that the UN convenes on plastic pollution, precisely in this Assembly they recognized:
Transboundary nature of plastic pollution.
The need for a comprehensive, holistic and coordinated response.
To the circular economy as a tool to address climate change and the loss of biodiversity while obtaining positive benefits at a social level.
